My mother Charlotte Maurer, got into the harness racing business in Yellow Springs, Ohio, when I was in high school and college. It was a money-losing business, but she loved it.
This blanket was awarded after one of their rare wins to a colt named Doug’s Special at a race at the Champaign County Fair in 1983. We were so proud of our colt and knew that our tiresome grooming and training had paid off, at least a few hundred dollars of winnings, plus this blanket.
My mother passed away in 2013, and she left me this blanket, a reminder of her racing days, when she put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into caring for her horses. On this particular day, she felt proud and hopeful that there would be many more blankets to come.
