This blanket is offered to salute my 89 year old mother, Susie (Yoshikawa) Aoyama, who left a WWII internment camp in the state of Wyoming at 19, worked as a church secretary in Chicago, Illinois, and put herself through college, receiving a B.S. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Illinois in 1951. She returned to UW in the 1960s and earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science and set up two scholarships for needy students a few years later at UW and Bellevue College to offer them the sort of options she was never extended.
