One-half of a diptych reflecting on the Marvin Gaye song “What’s Going On.” While the anti-war, anti-hate, activism content is resonant, what first caught my attention is the way the lyrics acknowledges family members, “Mother, mother…Brother, Brother…Sista Sista Sista….Father, father,” and and signals our relatedness beyond a biological construct. It seems as much of an anthem for today as it was when Marvin Gaye self-produced it.
