The phrase “ephemeral monument” was drawn from John N. Low and his book Imprints: The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and the City of Chicago. He argues that the Potawatomi people and other tribes who count Chicago as part of their indigenous home land are present amongst us in Chicago as ephemeral monuments. This piece was made as a placeholder for a show in anticipation of another work at the Block Museum, but didn’t end up being shown there. Beading by Rochelle Nielsen and her family. Beading was started with Marie Watt, Madalyn Barelle, Jahsiya Oliver, Lauren Sinner, Lisa Watt, and Rochelle Nielsen.

Clear, transparent #11 Czech glass seed beads sourced from A Bead Source (Portland, OR) and Shipwreck Beads (Lacey, WA_}. They are made in the Czech Republic on the same equipment as was used in the 1800s. Recently, this size and color have been discontinued.
