As a young man, my grandfather lost his sight as a result of a bad batch of moonshine. He later became an expert at chair-caning. I have a soft spot for the lap of antique rocking chairs caned by my grandfather, as well as Picasso’s Still Life With Chair Caning (1912). While I wanted the rope and lasso to evoke the complexity of my West, it actually was derived from an image of Wonder Woman.
